Travel & Stay
Our wedding weekend will center around the east end of St. Thomas, with Sapphire Beach as the ceremony site and hub for activities. Here’s a quick overview of how you’ll get here, and a few suggestions for your stay.
Getting around
Arrival
You’ll fly into Cyril E. King International Airport, accessible from most major airports in the United States with one connection max.
Unfortunately, Uber and Lyft are not available in the Virgin Islands. It’s very old school, but there will be plenty of taxis at the airport to take you anywhere on the island, with Sapphire Beach and nearby Red Hook being common stops. You can also call ahead and schedule a ride with the following companies as a start:
Big Love Taxi (340) 201-7299
Ambassadorial Taxi, Tours & Limo Service (340) 643-2098
My Love Taxi (340) 690-4909
JS Miller Taxi & Tours (470) 473-2165
Please note that some taxis here are still cash only. We recommend you keep some on hand just in case and anticipate anywhere from $15-25 per person to get from one end of the island to the other (airport to Sapphire Beach, Red Hook to Charlotte Amalie, etc). Short trips within the East End should be significantly less.
Car rentals
If you wish to do a lot of exploring on your own, rental cars are available for not much more than on the mainland. However if you plan on getting really adventurous, you may want to splurge for a Jeep or other 4WD vehicle to get down some of the less maintained and unpaved roads.
Remember, you drive on the left side of the road here!
Island-hopping
You can visit St. John via the Red Hook ferry which costs about $16 round trip, takes about 20 minutes and drops off in downtown Cruz Bay. Other islands, including the British Virgin Islands, are accessible as well though a slightly longer trip.
Wedding day transportation
Transportation will be provided from Sapphire Beach to the reception at Villa Botanica and back, no need to coordinate!
Lodging
Sapphire Beach
The wedding party and most family will be staying adjacent to the ceremony site on Sapphire Beach. Composed mostly of individually-owned condos vs. traditional hotels, this will be the most convenient mid-range option for many people, and grouping up in larger condos is possible.
Other hotels & resorts
St. Thomas is not a big island and there are great lodging options all over. Below are a few at a range of price points if you’d like to stay somewhere other than Sapphire Beach. However some of the best deals on the island will be through local vacation rental sites, AirBnB and VRBO.
